Away from the beaten path, the islands of the Baltic Sea reveal a surprising facet of Germany, between pristine nature and seaside elegance. Grand Angle invites you to a trekking journey of 8 days on the island of Rügen, the largest in the country, and its secret neighbour, Hiddensee, a haven of peace accessible only by boat.

Your starting point, the magnificent Hanseatic city of Stralsund, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, sets the tone for this journey. You will then explore coastal paths and centuries-old beech forests, whose particular light has inspired many painters. The route leads you to the heart of Jasmund National Park, where spectacular white chalk cliffs, such as the emblematic Königstuhl, plunge into the sea. The itinerary is also punctuated by the charm of the seaside resorts of Binz, Sellin or Göhren, whose Belle Époque architecture testifies to a rich past.

This trek in Germany of level 2 is designed for hikers who appreciate balanced stages, combining cultural discovery and immersion in nature. By choosing this hike in self-guided format, you progress at your own pace on this trip with the peace of mind of logistics entirely organized by us.

Program

Stralsund is a former Hanseatic city, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which deserves its reputation as one of the most beautiful cities in northern Europe. It indeed has a superb architectural heritage, from the market square to the town hall, passing through the churches of St. Mary and St. Nicholas, as well as a maritime history worthy of the greatest ports! Along the Promenade you can already catch a glimpse of the island of Rügen.

AccommodationNight in Stralsund

You take the boat transfer (included, approx. 2 hours) early in the morning to arrive on the island of Hiddensee: an island shaped like a seahorse, where cars are forbidden. Its beauty and tranquility have attracted a great number of artists – painters and writers – for centuries. You begin your walk near the nature reserve at Neuendorf, then cross the heath to Vitte, the capital of Hiddensee with its busy port. You then arrive at Kloster. In the afternoon another boat transfer will take you to the Wittow peninsula (included, approx. 1 hour).

AccommodationNight on the Wittow peninsula
Distance12 to 18 km
InfoHours of walking : 3 to 4 hours + Ferry

Today you head to the northernmost point of Germany: Cape Arkona. Far from the bustle of Vitte, you follow today the beautiful steep and wild coast to the majestic Cape Arkona and its two old lighthouses which seem to point to the end of the world. Admire the panorama alternating between cliffs, sandy or pebble beaches and the blue expanse of the Baltic Sea…

AccommodationNight on the Wittow peninsula as the day before
Distanceapprox. 20-24 km

For this early morning you have the choice between two routes to reach Glowe: you can walk along the Schaabe beach, or through the lagoon (“Boddens”). Glowe is a lovely seaside resort where many cafés and restaurants invite you to a tasty break. Once you arrive at Glowe, take a bus to Hagen. It takes you to the gates of Jasmund National Park. You will discover shaded trails crossed by absolutely extraordinary light (whatever the season), before giving way to breathtaking panoramas of the chalk cliffs. Continue until the “King’s Throne” Königstuhl, the largest chalk cliff on the island, with its 120m in height. Your walk will then lead you through the national park to the small seaside resort of Sassnitz.

AccommodationNight in Sassnitz or surroundings
Distanceapprox. 23-25 km

This is one of the most beautiful stages of the circuit. After breakfast, you take the ferry (not included, to be paid on site) to Binz, a seaside resort full of charm. From the boat, you discover the “colossus of Rügen”, a huge building of disproportionate proportions built under the Nazi regime that later served as a training center for the Red Army. It now houses several museums. Once a small fishing village, the resort of Binz developed in the nineteenth century into a seaside resort popular with German bourgeoisie. Still today the faded charm of its villas and the beach promenade transport you to the time of Theodor Fontane’s novels. You can enjoy the beautiful fine sandy beaches or stroll on the busy quays, which many small cafés, restaurants and shops enhance. You then climb to the Tempelberg whose highest point rises to 107m to reach the hunting lodge of Granitz. You will then be rewarded for your efforts by a superb panorama.

AccommodationNight in Binz or Sellin
Distance18 to 26 km

After a stroll along the coast you arrive at Sellin, the prettiest and most sought-after seaside resort on this island whose bourgeois villa architecture takes you back to the magic of the Belle Époque! Your steps then lead you to Baabe beach and through the heath to Göhren you can continue to the Mönchgut peninsula (the monk’s property). The “speeding Roland” Rasender Roland (not included, to be paid on site), takes you back to Binz or Sellin to spend the night. This train humorously named does not exceed 30km/h. In service since 1895 it connects Putbus to Göhren, passing through Binz, Sellin and Baabe.

AccommodationNight in Binz or Sellin
Distance14 to 22 km

Magnificent trails lead you along the Jasmund and Greifswalder lagoons, between land and sea, through the National Park, to Putbus, the island’s first seaside resort, built in 1816 and residence of Prince Wilhelm Malte who had a classical-style complex erected there in 1810 (Theatre, orangery, palace, secondary school…). You continue by train from Putbus to Stralsund (included), the superb Hanseatic city that combines modernity, gastronomy, and a fascinating historical heritage. If you wish to have more time to visit Stralsund, you can shorten the path by taking the famous “Rasende Roland” again (not included, to be paid on site).

AccommodationNight in Stralsund
Distance18 to 20 km

On site, we may sometimes be led to modify the indicated itinerary somewhat: either at the organizational level (accommodation overload issues, terrain conditions changed - landslides, degraded trails…), or directly due to the guide (weather, group level…). Trust us, these modifications are always made in your best interest.

A number of our trips offer the opportunity for swimming, during a stopover or at the end of the day. It would be a shame not to take advantage of it! However, we emphasize that you are the sole judge of the appropriateness of a swim; these swims are therefore at your responsibility and at your own risk.

Multiple swimming opportunities in the Baltic Sea seaside resorts.

Don’t forget to bring your swimsuit and towel. Temperature generally varies between 15°C and 30°C during the proposed period.

Rügen is the sunniest region in Germany; indeed, the microclimate on the island of Rügen allows for pleasant and sometimes hot days from April (between 15° and 20°) until October. May and September are particularly beautiful. Swimming is possible from June onwards; until the end of September the water temperature is equivalent to that of the Atlantic (French coast). Despite the sea breeze in summer (late June to mid-September), temperatures can reach 35°.

Some legends of the island of Rügen

Klaus Störtebeker (pronounced shteur-te-becker): Nicknamed the Red Corsair, Klaus Störtebeker, whose name in Low German means “hits the cup”, is a famous pirate from northern Germany who lived in the 14th century. The city of Hamburg supposedly tasked Simon Utrecht with capturing him, which he succeeded in doing despite the pirate’s bribery attempts. According to the tales, he was either burnt or beheaded in 1401. According to the latter version, he was promised that all the pirates before whom he could walk after being beheaded would be pardoned. 11 pirates were thus to be saved but the mayor of Hamburg broke his promise. Legend also tells that his ghost still roams the shores of the Baltic Sea in search of his treasure which he supposedly buried in Rügen…

Königsstuhl : From the sea these are 118m meters of crumbly rocks, beaten by spray, almost smooth in places. They say that whoever dares to climb the cliff and then sit on the stone forming a seat would become king of Rügen… (It is absolutely forbidden to attempt to climb the cliff, it would prove fatal).

The Woman of the Watchtower Rock : At the foot of Königsstuhl stands a huge granite block, smoothed by erosion, called the watchtower rock. Every 7 years a beautiful young woman would appear at the first light of the day of 24 June (Saint John). Whoever greeted her like this: « Guten Tag, Gott helfe » (« Good day, may God be with you »), would free her from a curse. To thank him, she would show him the location of a treasure. Less risky than climbing Königsstuhl, this legend nevertheless requires working on your German pronunciation…

—  A beautiful route, undoubtedly designed more for cyclists than hikers, but nonetheless pleasant and doable without any particular difficulty. We didn't come across any French people, just a few hikers, but hundreds of cyclists!

Eric 12/27/25

—  Travel far from the beaten track in a natural environment that is often beautiful and sometimes romantic.

Catherine 12/27/25

—  I think this trip should no longer be listed for walkers; or better planned to spend less time walking on uninteresting bike paths.

Thank you for your feedback! We’ve taken note of your comment and will share it with our local partner. We’ll explore ways to adjust the route to minimize the sections on bike paths and make the walking experience more enjoyable.
