Arrive in Córdoba and settle into your accommodation. Depending on your arrival time, take some time to explore the city’s treasures, such as the Great Mosque.
We recommend adding an extra night in Córdoba to immerse yourself in the city’s history, starting with the famous ruins of Medina Azahara.
Overnight in Córdoba.
The route brings together 2 of Andalusia’s most iconic cities: Córdoba, home to the philosophers, astronomers and mathematicians whose knowledge illuminated the Middle Ages through to the Renaissance. And at the other end, Granada, a powerful kingdom that nurtured the sciences and architectural refinement. This holiday combines culture, nature and anthropology, a delight for the senses at every stage!
Let’s discover the magnificent natural landscapes between these two cities: Córdoba and Granada. Once in Córdoba, we will delve into its magnificent past and lively present, then travel to Baena, the olive oil capital, high in the Subbética Mountains, designated a Nature Reserve. Since time immemorial, these mountains have been home to some of Andalusia’s most beautiful and romantic towns and villages, such as Priego de Córdoba, Carcabuey, Cabra, Zuheros and Luque.
However, our journey extends beyond this nature reserve and its stately villages. We will also visit the area around an important fortress and the rugged mountains that protect the plain and the Nasrid capital of Granada, part of the heritage of a small, legendary village called Moclín.
Once in Granada itself, if its many attractions leave you enough time, you can discover the secrets of the Moorish wells and waterways, trace the origins of famous poems within the walls of the Alhambra, stroll through the old Moorish quarter, the Albaicín, filled with sounds and aromas, and enjoy tapas with views of the Sierra Nevada mountains!

Program
This morning, you will still have time to explore Córdoba before taking the bus to Zuheros (check the current timetable before travelling). After a bus journey of around 1 hour 30 minutes, you will arrive in the romantic, picturesque village of Zuheros.
Overnight in Zuheros.
A lovely walk around Zuheros through the Bailón Canyon. You can follow the river or continue into the heart of the Subbética Natural Park and enjoy the tranquillity of the surroundings. You then rejoin the canyon before returning to Zuheros.
Overnight in Zuheros.
In the morning, transfer by taxi from Zuheros to Zagrilla, the starting point for today’s walk. You have two options for reaching Priego from Zagrilla: take the shorter route along the Camino del Hoyo, or follow the longer route via the village of Carcabuey, through fields, across streams and among olive trees, before rejoining the path to Priego.
Overnight in Priego, with a session at the Arab baths included.
Transfer to Alcalá la Real by taxi (30 minutes). The walk begins along old paths through walled olive groves, before you climb to the broad plateau along a beautiful trail lined with sumac shrubs. These are particularly spectacular in autumn (late October to early November), with their lovely red fruit. Once on the plateau, you can enjoy magnificent views of the snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains and the imposing fortress of Alcalá. After visiting the castle, continue to your accommodation in Alcalá.
Overnight in Alcalá
After breakfast, a taxi will take you to an olive cooperative, the starting point for today’s walk. Walking through the olive groves, you will reach the medieval village of Moclín, once the stronghold guarding the pass between Alcalá and Granada. If you would like a shorter route, you can ask the taxi to drop you off in Moclín. Here, you can choose between two routes: a forest path to Tózar (6km, 400m ascent), or a route through the mountains via Olivares (8km, 450m ascent). Arrive in Tózar in time to enjoy the sunset from the terrace!
Overnight in Tózar
After breakfast, a taxi will pick you up at the confirmed time and take you to your hotel in Granada (a journey of approximately 1 hour). You can spend this final day exploring the city’s wonders: the palace and gardens of the Alhambra, the Nasrid Palaces, heading out for tapas, and more. You can extend your stay in Granada to enjoy a walk through the forest and above the Alhambra to the Silla del Moro, which offers superb views of the Alhambra and the city. You will follow the Royal Irrigation Canal, with views of the Albaicín, then descend to the River Darro and continue to Sacromonte, where you can visit the famous caves.
Overnight in Granada.
The trip ends after breakfast.
We may sometimes need to change the itinerary described, either for logistical reasons (accommodation being fully booked, changes in terrain conditions, rockfalls, damaged trails, etc.) or because of weather conditions. These changes are always made in your best interests, for your safety and greater comfort!

For carrying your belongings
- A comfortable 30 to 50 L backpack with a hip belt to carry your personal belongings and picnic lunch during the day
- A bag for luggage transfers: a backpack, a travel bag in good condition or a suitcase that is not too bulky. One bag per person; limited to 15kg
In our magazine, discover how to pack your hiking backpack.
For hiking
For maximum comfort, choose a layered clothing system: warm base layers (leggings + top) made from fabrics such as “Carline” or “Capilene” (hollow fibres that wick away perspiration) + a sweatshirt or fleece jacket + a mountain jacket and overtrousers with a waterproof, breathable membrane (such as Gore-Tex or equivalent) for bad weather. As a general rule, except in hot climates and countries, avoid cotton, which holds moisture close to the body (and takes a long time to dry), and choose suitable synthetic fabrics instead.
- Hiking boots with ankle support, a good treaded sole, a firm heel counter and good waterproofing
- Comfortable hiking socks (at least 3 pairs)
- A fleece
- Comfortable walking trousers (quick-drying technical fabric)
- Comfortable technical shorts
- Technical T-shirts or base layers (quick-drying fabric)
- A long-sleeved shirt
- Walking poles (telescopic), very important for making walking easier. Discover all the benefits of hiking poles in our dedicated article or how to choose your hiking poles
Please note: synthetic technical clothing performs very well. New merino wool clothing is also available; it performs very well, is comfortable to wear and has the advantage of not developing sweat odours!
For your lunchtime picnic
- Your “kitchen” kit: a plastic bowl, container or plate, and cutlery (spoon, fork, knife)
- 1 or 2 water bottles (a total capacity of at least 1.5 L) – compulsory –; an insulated bottle for winter
For protection from the sun and rain
- Sunscreen (high protection)
- Sunglasses
- A hat, cap or bucket hat
- A rain poncho or a waterproof jacket such as a softshell or Gore-Tex jacket, and possibly waterproof trousers
After your walk
- A pair of running-style trainers for the evening
- A change of clothes and underwear
- A toiletry bag and a small towel
- A swimsuit and towel for wellness facilities (where specified) or swimming
- A small first-aid kit: personal medication, surgical masks, hand sanitiser, plasters, sterile dressings and a bandage, gauze, disinfectant, arnica pellets, aspirin, etc. (Please note that this list is not exhaustive and should be adapted to your own medical needs.)
You can find these tips in our article #“what to take with you on a hike”.

A few words about Andalusia
The blue of the sea and sky contrasts with the white of the villages. In Andalusia, Muslim, Jewish and Christian civilisations intertwine in fabulous arabesques. The mountains caress the Costa del Sol, sadly sometimes marred by rampant concrete development. The sun shines with blazing intensity, and from spring onwards, visitors from Northern Europe flock to every corner of Andalusia.
Spain becomes a warm, easy-going land: welcoming, in a word. This hospitality is deeply rooted in Andalusian soil. It has nurtured a people united despite their diverse origins (Moorish, Jewish, Catholic and Romani).
Andalusia is all this and many other subtle details: the shade of its streets and the intensity of its gazes, the tranquillity of the afternoon and the bustle of its ferias, the fervour of its processions and the tangy taste of olives. To satisfy this wonderful appetite for life while refreshing the mind, there is a fine solution: tapas, manzanilla and siesta.

— This is a great way to explore both the fabulous cities of Córdoba and Granada and to be captivated by the magnificent Andalusian villages—so white and full of flowers—and the roads winding through a sea of olive trees. However, you’ll need to be careful not to get lost.

— Great discovery of Andalusia with our teenage grandchildren. We enjoyed the variety of this tour, which starts with Cordoba and ends with Granada. In between, there are some great walks to discover rural Andalusia and superb villages with a rich heritage. Varied, welcoming accommodation. Please note: sightseeing tours are not included, and must be booked in advance (when registering for the Alhambra).
