Our level 3 walking holidays: who are they for and what do they offer?

An intermediate walking holiday is suitable for people who already have experience of walking in the mountains. Daily stages last an average of 5 to 7 hours, and elevation gains can reach 600 to 900 metres per day. This level is ideal if you want to walk iconic routes, immerse yourself more deeply in unspoilt mountain ranges and enjoy the satisfaction of a well-paced physical effort, without aiming for a technical feat.

How do our holidays work?

At Grand Angle, we know that every walker has their own preferences. That’s why we offer two ways to experience the adventure:

  • A self-guided walking holiday : For those who enjoy walking at their own pace. We take care of all the logistics: booking accommodation, transporting your luggage and providing a detailed route guide. All you need to do is follow the trail and enjoy the moment.
  • A guided walking holiday : Ideal for those who enjoy sharing the experience and want to benefit from a local expert’s knowledge. Our enthusiastic guides lead you along the trails, share their insights into the wildlife, plants and heritage, and keep the group together and safe.

Which destinations suit an intermediate walking holiday?

There is a wide range of possibilities for level 3 walkers. Among our most popular destinations, you will find:

  • The Dolomites : A unique UNESCO-listed mountain range in Italy, with spectacular landscapes of limestone towers and lush green valleys. Explore routes such as the trek from Lake Braies to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo to fully immerse yourself in the landscape.
  • The French Alpine arc : From the legendary Tour du Mont Blanc to the hidden trails of the Vercors massif, taking in the wild beauty of Queyras and the balcony trails of the Chartreuse, the French Alps offer endless opportunities for adventure.
  • Madeira : Known as the “island of flowers”, this Portuguese gem invites you to follow its famous “levadas” through lush landscapes with sweeping ocean views. An ideal destination for a walking holiday that offers a real change of scenery.

Our tips for preparing for your walking holiday

Good preparation is the key to a successful walking holiday. For a level 3 holiday, we recommend keeping up regular physical activity in the weeks before departure (cycling, running or swimming). Make sure your equipment is suitable too: well-worn-in walking boots are essential. Feel free to consult our detailed information sheets for each holiday and, if you have any doubts, contact our advisers; their first-hand knowledge of the terrain will help you make the best choice.

Find the walking holiday that suits you

Every walker has their own pace. If you’re unsure whether the intermediate level is right for you, we invite you to explore our other holiday categories to find the one that best matches your fitness and what you feel like doing.

—  Very interesting itineraries that often take you along less-traveled trails. Transportation and hotels were impeccable. A few inconsistencies between the app and the roadbook. The map showing how to get to Portela from Porto da Cruz is missing. Overall, we’re thrilled with this trip!

Thank you very much for your feedback! We're delighted that you enjoyed your stay. Thank you also for your comments on the roadbook and the app—we'll look into them to improve our materials. We look forward to accompanying you on your next trip!

—  Scenery was out of this world. The ascents were hard but it meant you could stop and take it all in, take your time and appreciate just what you are achieving.

—  This was one of the best trips of my life!! Physically, the hiking was challenging, but doable, which was what my party was looking for. Every minute of the day, the views were SPECTACULAR!!! Literally breathtaking. Our guide took great care of us and we LOVED our 3 course meals every night in the different, fascinating cities. We also met so many fun and friendly people on the Tour. Loved it all❤️

—  Be prepared for some demanding hikes with some long, steep climbs over passes (with some parts on unstable scree and a few places where you have a cabled handrail to assist). I was worried about how I would handle some of the more exposed places but found it less scary than I expected. The reward for all your effort are the stunning views and the satisfaction of reaching lovely refugios for lunches and overnight stays. Celebrating each hike with Aperol and Hugo spritzes was a daily highlight! The organization by Grand Angle was excellent and the app is a fantastic resource and guide. It ended up being fun following the instructions and figuring out the connecting bus rides. One other point - we highly recommend booking luggage transfer but be aware that due to how that works, you are carrying two days worth of gear practically every day of the trip and just topping up from your luggage when you do see it. Get your training in for this one and you will be ready for the succession of hard hikes over 10 days.
