Map FRALP0032

Follow a historically rich section of the Paths of Saint-Jacques for a self-guided hike from 6 days in the heart of Burgundy. Your journey begins in Autun, a city of Art and History, whose ancient remains and majestic Saint-Lazare Cathedral set a solemn backdrop from your first steps.

As the days pass, the landscapes evolve, leaving behind ancient stones for the gentle rolling hills of hedgerows and lush meadows. The trail then ventures south to skirt the renowned vineyards of the Côte Chalonnaise, such as Mercurey and Givry. You will walk between winemakers' villages and characteristic medieval towns, at your own pace.

The final approach is marked by a rich Romanesque heritage. The chapels, washhouses, and priories that dot the route announce the imminent arrival in Cluny, whose famous abbey was one of the greatest spiritual beacons of medieval Christendom. This journey, particularly pleasant under the light of spring or the colours of autumn, is a true immersion in the soul and history of Burgundy.

Program

Arrival in the city of Autun, famously known as the “Gallic city”. This locality holds a precious architectural heritage, notably the majestic Saint-Lazare Cathedral at the heart of its historic centre. Autun, labelled “City of Art and History”, also houses remarkable ancient remains such as the Roman theatre, the largest in Roman Gaul, Gallo-Roman ramparts, the Saint-André Gate, and the Temple of Janus.

Night in Autun with half board

Short taxi transfer to shorten the stage. Then the hiking landscapes change as you enter southern agricultural Burgundy and its hedgerow scenery. Arrival in the charming village of Couches and its medieval stronghold, built on a rocky outcrop.

  • Distance: 21 km after transfer
  • Hiking hours: 6.5 hours
  • Elevation gain: 316
D-Elevation loss: 503

The trail crosses the foothills of the Mâconnais, offering landscapes that evolve with a notable immersion in the southern Burgundy wine region. It skirts the boundaries of the Mercurey vineyards before reaching Givry, renowned for its vineyards.

Night in a bed and breakfast

  • Distance: 27km (stage shortening possible)
  • Hiking hours: 7.5 hours
  • Elevation gain: 699
D-Elevation loss: 801

Early in the day, the hike continues towards the Montagny les Buxy vineyards… crossing a small ridge and arrival in St Boil.

Technical and practical information

Medium: 6 to 7 hours of walking on trails presenting little technical difficulty but fairly long walking days. Hiking experience is desirable, but not essential.

Nothing to carry: You only carry your daily items in a small bag. You find your baggage every evening at the end of the stage. Your baggage is transported by vehicle and is limited to one bag per person. If you choose the option without baggage transfer, you carry your own necessary items for the stay.

Important: We ask you to leave your baggage in the hall of each accommodation at 8am each morning. Each participant must absolutely limit their belongings to one bag per person, not exceeding 20kg. Any excess in number (1 bag) or weight (20kg) may result in additional charges billed by the carrier at the end of the hike, or the refusal to transport a bag deemed too bulky.

We can book you a return transfer from Cluny to Autun, please ask us.

From 2 people.

6 days, 5 nights, 4 days of hiking.

We handle hotel reservations and optional luggage transport. We provide you with a detailed map of the itinerary and step-by-step instructions.

Accommodation is offered in double rooms with shower and toilet, in guest houses, bed & breakfasts, or hotels 1 to 3 stars, subject to availability. Rooms are accessible from 5 PM. If unavailable, two consecutive nights at the same establishment may be arranged with a transfer, without impact on your hike. This possibility and any additional charges will be specified when confirming your booking.

Hotel Classification

In France, an increasing number of hotels and bed & breakfasts refuse any classification, even establishments that were still classified a year or two ago. These establishments do not lose quality in any way, quite the opposite. Among bed & breakfasts, many are charming rooms. If we indicate, for example, a comfort level “2* or equivalent”: this means the establishment is not necessarily classified, but has comfort equivalent to a 2* hotel.

Half-board formula: breakfast and dinner served hot (except Day 3 as B&B). Picnics are not included. You can generally order them the day before at your hotel if you do not want to prepare them yourself. Price (for guidance): between 8€ and 15€ per person. Not all accommodations offer this service.

Resupply on the route: It is strongly recommended to do your shopping in large towns. There are not always resupply opportunities along the way. Resupply options are indicated in your travel journal.

Please inform us at registration of any food allergies or special dietary requirements; we will do our best to adapt your meals.

Day 1 in the afternoon in Autun.

For hiking

  • Mountain shoes that support the ankle with good tread sole, featuring a good heel counter and waterproofing
  • Comfortable socks “special for hiking” (3 pairs minimum)
  • A fleece jacket
  • Comfortable trousers for walking (quick-drying technical fabric)
  • Shorts, t-shirts and technical underwear (quick-drying fabric)
  • A long-sleeved shirt (quick-drying technical fabric)
  • Walking poles (telescopic), very important for facilitating the walk

Note: synthetic technical clothing is very effective. New merino wool clothing has also emerged; they are very effective and pleasant to wear, and have the advantage of not developing sweat odours! (Brand Icebreaker, Ruka, etc…).

In general, avoid cotton, which cools when wet

Against sun and rain

  • Sunscreen (high protection) and sunglasses
  • Hat, cap or sun hat
  • A windbreaker
  • A rain cape or a “Gore-Tex”

For the midday picnic

  • Bowl, box or plastic plate
  • Cutlery (spoon, fork, knife)
  • Water bottle of 1.5 Litre minimum (compulsory); a thermos water bottle for winter

After exertion

  • A pair of jogging-style trainers for the evening
  • Change of clothing and personal items
  • Toiletry bag and towel (mini)
  • A mini first-aid kit: personal medications, plasters, non-stick gauze or “2nd skin”, gauze, disinfectant, arnica granules and aspirin in case of minor injuries… (quite a list! but rest assured, the first-aid kit often comes back intact from your week of hiking)
  • A small comfortable backpack of 40 to 50 L with hip belt for carrying your personal belongings and picnic during the day
  • A support bag: a backpack, a travel bag in good condition, or a not too bulky suitcase. One bag per person; limited to 10kg.

The oceanic influence results in frequent rainfall throughout the year (with nevertheless a maximum in autumn and a minimum in summer) and changing weather. The semi-continental influence results in a monthly temperature range among the highest in France (18 °C versus 15 °C in Paris), cold winters with relatively frequent snowfall and warmer summers than on the coasts, with occasional violent storms.

It is this semi-continental influence that makes wine growing possible in Burgundy.

Thoroughly enjoyed our first cycling tour around Burgundy. Huge thanks to grand angle for helping us with our bikes. We hit a snafu and they were able to get us replacements the same day! 🙌 The distances per day were a good workout but enjoyable for us 55+ on regular bikes.

The route along the greenway is interesting because you pass through train stations and their platforms. Riding through the Bois Clair Tunnel is also an experience not to be missed. Be sure to stop at Cormatin Castle. The bike facilities are adequate. Everything went as planned.

The organization was excellent, and the choice of hotels was impeccable. We received a very warm welcome. The itinerary was very detailed, and our luggage arrived without a hitch. We usually take a cycling trip in France lasting at least a week every year, and although this was our first trip with Grand Angle, we were very satisfied. Depending on the route options, we definitely plan to book with Grand Angle again.
