A specialist in walking holidays in France and Brittany, Grand Angle offers a 7-day itinerary on the Guérande Peninsula. This self-guided holiday takes you from the Vilaine estuary to the stretches of fine sand at La Baule, following an iconic section of the GR®34, the famous customs officers' coastal path.

The itinerary offers a rich variety of landscapes, alternating between the coast and inland areas. You will walk along remarkable beaches such as Mine d’Or in Pénestin and discover the charm of Piriac-sur-Mer, an authentic Petite Cité de Caractère (Small Town of Character) with flower-lined lanes. The route then takes you into the heart of the Guérande and Mès salt marshes, a landscape shaped by the work of salt workers, before reaching the medieval town of Guérande and the lively ports of La Turballe and Le Croisic.

Ask our team if you would like advice on other guided walking routes in Brittany.

Hotel classification

In France, more and more hotels and guesthouses are choosing not to have an official rating, including establishments that were still rated a year or two ago. This does not mean their quality has declined—far from it. Many guesthouses offer charming accommodation.
If we indicate, for example, a comfort level of “3* or equivalent”: this means that the establishment does not necessarily have an official rating, but offers comfort comparable to that of a 3* hotel.

Meals

Breakfast is included.

Please let us know about any food allergies or special dietary requirements when booking; we will do our best to adapt your meals.

Start

On Day 1 at your accommodation in Quimiac

Finish

On Day 7 at the hotel in Le Pouliguen.

La Baule-Escoublac is a useful rail gateway for the Guérande Peninsula. Check current rail and local transport connections to Quimiac and from Le Pouliguen before booking onward travel. If travelling by car, confirm parking arrangements and any charges with your accommodation; local bus routes and timetables may change.

A number of our trips offer opportunities to swim, either during a stage or at the end of the day. It would be a shame not to make the most of them. However, we emphasise that you alone must decide whether it is appropriate to swim; you therefore swim under your own responsibility and at your own risk.

As members of the board of directors since 2018, we actively help the sector adopt more meaningful practices. In practical terms, we focus on:

  • Transparency in our practices and prices
  • Respect for our partners and local communities
  • Protecting the environment on every trip

We also encourage travellers to take simple steps to protect the places they visit and create opportunities for meaningful encounters.

Since 2025, Grand Angle has been recognised as a Travelife Partner, an international label that certifies our responsible environmental, ethical and sustainable management practices, both within our company and in our work with partners and the organisation of our trips.

This label, the second level of a rigorous international certification programme, recognises our concrete actions to support responsible tourism. We are actively working towards the next level, Travelife Certified, in line with our sustainability policy

For hiking

  • Waterproof hiking boots with ankle support, a sturdy heel counter and well-treaded soles
  • Comfortable hiking socks (at least 3 pairs)
  • A fleece
  • Comfortable walking trousers (quick-drying technical fabric)
  • Shorts, T-shirts and technical underwear (quick-drying fabric)
  • A long-sleeved shirt (quick-drying technical fabric)
  • Walking poles (telescopic), very important for making walking easier

Note: synthetic technical clothing performs very well. Merino wool clothing is also now available; it performs very well, is comfortable to wear and has the advantage of resisting sweat odours (brands include Icebreaker, Ruka, etc.)!
As a general rule, avoid cotton, which makes you cold when wet

For protection from sun and rain

  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • A hat, cap or bucket hat (helmet)
  • A windproof jacket
  • A rain poncho or a “Gore-Tex” jacket

For your picnic lunch

  • A plastic bowl, container or plate
  • Cutlery (spoon, fork, knife)
  • A water bottle with a capacity of at least 1.5 litres (essential); an insulated bottle for winter

After the day’s activities

  • A pair of running shoes for the evening
  • A change of clothes and underwear
  • A toiletry bag and towel (small)
  • A small first-aid kit: personal medication, Elastoplast, Biogaze or “2nd skin”, gauze, antiseptic, arnica pellets and aspirin for minor aches and injuries… (quite a list! But rest assured, your first-aid kit often comes home untouched after your week of hiking)

Guérande is a town with ancient origins, military-style architecture and magnificent ramparts dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. It lies on a peninsula, and its role as a port explains the sturdy ramparts built to protect the crossroads of the La Roche-Bernard–Le Pouliguen and La Turballe–Saint-Lyphard routes. It is, of course, well known for its salt, but less so for its other specialities: samphire and salidou, a salted butter caramel.

A beautiful hiking trail along the coast, with its many natural, often wild beaches. A wide variety of vegetation and landscapes from one day to the next. Slightly uneven terrain, often with wooden steps. Comfortable hotels and a warm welcome.

Very favorable opinion. The daily organization proposed by Grand Angle is clear, both in terms of the routes to be taken and the organization of luggage.

A beautiful itinerary, magnificent scenery. Comfortable accommodation. Everything well organized.

A magnificent hike through exceptional scenery, and aside from two rainy and windy mornings, the weather was absolutely glorious. A wonderful experience of brisk hiking, complete with fantastic swims in idyllic little coves and friendly conversations along the trail with hikers of all ages and backgrounds. What we really liked was the central location, the warm welcome from the owners of the Hotel Saint-Amant, and the quality of the breakfasts and picnics; it was also very convenient to use the (the blue buses) to get to and from the hike starting points—with a special mention for the kindness and helpfulness with which the drivers and other staff managed the crowds, making sure no one was left stranded at the bus stop and calling in backup buses when needed. In short, this was a hike we’ll always remember fondly.
