Take time for an extended journey

An extended journey gives the landscape time to change and lets you settle into a rhythm. On foot or by bike, these journeys connect regions that cannot be understood in a single stage. Some routes combine several ways of exploring. Grand Angle helps you choose the duration and difficulty level that suit your way of travelling, then the right travel format. Explore the options presented below and let’s discuss the route that appeals to you.

What we mean by an extended journey

It might be a long-distance crossing or a route linking several regions over around two weeks. Distance alone does not define it. What matters is the continuity of the route and the time given to each stage. Our long-distance crossings offer an initial overview of these formats.

Choosing the duration and pace

Start with the number of days you have available, then look at the daily activity time and elevation gain. The frequency of transfers also affects the overall pace. A long journey can remain manageable if the stages are consistent and luggage transport is arranged. Conversely, a shorter crossing may require greater effort. Our selection of 2-week trips lets you compare options of the same duration.

Choosing guided or self-guided travel

On a guided trip, the guide leads the journey and the group travels together. On a self-guided trip, you follow a prepared itinerary, with route notes and the services included in the programme. The choice depends on how much you want to share your days with others, your ability to travel independently and the terrain. Our point-to-point trips bring together these different ways of travelling.

Preparing for a long-distance journey

Before booking, discuss your experience and expectations for comfort. Also explain how much time you would like to spend in each region. Our team can help you compare the stages and identify sections that require specific preparation. For further inspiration, explore our selection of iconic treks.

—  Very interesting itineraries that often take you along less-traveled trails. Transportation and hotels were impeccable. A few inconsistencies between the app and the roadbook. The map showing how to get to Portela from Porto da Cruz is missing. Overall, we’re thrilled with this trip!

Thank you very much for your feedback! We're delighted that you enjoyed your stay. Thank you also for your comments on the roadbook and the app—we'll look into them to improve our materials. We look forward to accompanying you on your next trip!

—  The route is as difficult as stated in the brochure, even dangerous in some sections, but extraordinarily beautiful, all the more so as we had good weather all week. The guide was friendly and attentive whenever one of us ran into difficulty, and the welcome at the refuges was warm. To be done by fit people who aren't prone to vertigo!

—  Be prepared for some demanding hikes with some long, steep climbs over passes (with some parts on unstable scree and a few places where you have a cabled handrail to assist). I was worried about how I would handle some of the more exposed places but found it less scary than I expected. The reward for all your effort are the stunning views and the satisfaction of reaching lovely refugios for lunches and overnight stays. Celebrating each hike with Aperol and Hugo spritzes was a daily highlight! The organization by Grand Angle was excellent and the app is a fantastic resource and guide. It ended up being fun following the instructions and figuring out the connecting bus rides. One other point - we highly recommend booking luggage transfer but be aware that due to how that works, you are carrying two days worth of gear practically every day of the trip and just topping up from your luggage when you do see it. Get your training in for this one and you will be ready for the succession of hard hikes over 10 days.

—  The trip was wonderful. The staff at Grand Angle were great to work with. They were very responsive and answered all the questions that we had. There was a slight discrepancy with our itinerary and the description within the Roadbook directions in the GPS app. That caused a slight confusion but we were able to figure it out. The hike was amazing and they huts were so much fun. I would definitely take another trip using Grand Angle.
