Away from the bustle of the seaside resorts, Mallorca reveals its authentic, untamed character. This Balearic island is much more than a beach destination: it is a paradise for walkers, a playground where nature displays all its power and splendour. In the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Serra de Tramuntana, walking trails wind between sea and mountains, offering breathtaking coastal views and complete immersion in an unspoilt ecosystem.

This self-guided trek takes you along the island’s finest trails, from the crystal-clear bays of Pollença to the hillside villages of Deià and Sóller, via the sanctuary of Lluc, an iconic stop on the old pilgrimage routes. Eight days fully immersed in contrasting landscapes.

What sets this experience apart is its fully self-guided format: you walk at your own pace along waymarked trails, with the assurance of seamless organisation. Drawing on 40 years of expertise in self-guided holidays, Grand Angle has carefully selected every place to stay, combining charming hotels with a traditional monastery for an authentic introduction to Mallorca’s heritage.

This adventure combines the physical challenge of mountain walking with the relaxed Mediterranean way of life, interspersed with cultural discoveries. Whether you enjoy walking in Mallorca or are curious to explore the #Balearic Islands in a different way, this holiday reveals a lesser-known side of this iconic destination in Spain, beyond the familiar image of seaside resorts.

With the majestic peaks of the Serra de Tramuntana always in sight, you wind your way alongside Puig Tomir and cross a mountain pass. This stage offers varied scenery, taking you through meadows, blossoming orchards and lush holm oak forests. Taking the train through the valley of orange groves, you will reach the lively capital, Palma. You can stroll through its bustling narrow streets and admire the impressive cathedral before walking along the beachfront promenade to Playa de Palma. Another option we recommend is a walking visit to Fornalutx, Mallorca’s most beautiful village. You will walk past olive groves, almond trees and fragrant orange orchards through the green, fertile Sóller valley.

For carrying your belongings

  • A comfortable 30 to 50 L backpack with a hip belt to carry your personal belongings and picnic lunch during the day
  • A bag for luggage transfers: a backpack, a travel bag in good condition or a suitcase that is not too bulky. One bag per person, limited to 15 kg

Discover how to pack your hiking backpack properly in our magazine.

For hiking

For maximum comfort, choose a layered clothing system: warm base layers (leggings + top) such as “Carline” or “Capilene” (hollow fibres that wick away perspiration) + a sweatshirt or fleece jacket + a mountain jacket and overtrousers with a waterproof, breathable membrane (such as Gore-Tex or equivalent) for bad weather. In general, except in hot climates and countries, avoid cotton, which traps moisture next to your body (and dries slowly), and choose suitable synthetic fabrics instead.

  • Hiking boots with ankle support, a good treaded sole, a supportive heel counter and good waterproofing
  • Comfortable hiking socks (at least 3 pairs)
  • A fleece
  • Comfortable walking trousers (quick-drying technical fabric)
  • Comfortable technical shorts
  • Technical T-shirts or base layers (quick-drying fabric)
  • A long-sleeved shirt
  • Walking poles (telescopic), which are very important for making walking easier. Discover all the benefits of hiking poles in our dedicated article or read how to choose your hiking poles

Note: synthetic technical clothing performs very well. New merino wool clothing has also become available; it performs very well, is comfortable to wear and has the advantage of resisting perspiration odours!

For your picnic lunch

  • Your eating kit: a bowl, plastic container or plate, and cutlery (spoon, fork, knife)
  • 1 or 2 water bottles (a total capacity of at least 1,5 L) – essential –; an insulated flask for winter

For protection from sun and rain

  • Sunscreen (high protection)
  • Sunglasses
  • A hat, cap or bucket hat
  • A rain poncho or a waterproof jacket such as a softshell or Gore-Tex jacket, and waterproof trousers if needed

After your walk

  • A pair of trainers or running shoes for the evening
  • A change of clothes and underwear
  • A toiletry bag and a small towel
  • Swimwear and a towel for wellness facilities (where specified) or swimming
  • A small first-aid kit: personal medication, surgical masks, hand sanitiser, plasters, sterile compresses and a bandage, gauze, disinfectant, arnica granules and aspirin, etc. (Please note that this list is not exhaustive and should be adapted to your own medical needs.)

Find these tips in our article #“What to take with you on a hike”.

This list is intended as a guide and should be adapted to suit your trip and the season in which you travel.

Country: Spain
Archipelago: Balearic Islands
Highest point: Puig Major (1445m)
Largest city: Palma
Population: 869067 inhabitants

Clichés abound about the largest of the Balearic Islands. Yet Mallorca is much more than sunshine, beaches and hotels.
In the heart of Mallorca lie villages surrounded by farmland, olive trees and almond trees whose white blossoms blanket the landscape in February. The archipelago’s capital, Palma de Mallorca, holds some lovely surprises behind the walls of its old town.
As for the winding Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is utterly captivating. Stretching along the island’s entire west coast, it plunges towards the sea in dramatic cliffs and rugged peaks, rising to more than 1000m above the water. Here, the handful of hilltop towns and villages, surrounded by citrus groves, are complemented by charming little harbours tucked into tiny coves, reached along twisting roads with countless bends.

—  In fact, I regretted that Grand Angle hadn't informed us that this was in fact a trek organized by an Austrian tour operator and aimed primarily at a German audience. I have nothing against Germans or Austrians, but it has to be said that we really don't have the same habits, especially when it comes to accommodation and meals. Having been to Mallorca before, I knew that there was a very strong German tourist contingent and I thought that the agency subcontracting the tour was more Mallorcan, but alas for me I was mistaken. What's more, we've had problems with the level (you had nothing to do with it!), so you'll understand why we came back to France a little frustrated.
