Black Forest Tour
Imagine a mountain region where dense conifer forests open out onto rolling views, dotted with shimmering lakes and traditional farmhouses with an easy-going charm. Close to Switzerland and Lake Constance, the Black Forest is an excellent destination for a cycling holiday in Germany, offering a mosaic of authentic landscapes and a warm welcome.
Our itinerary for this cycling tour of the Black Forest has been designed as a well-balanced loop that unfolds gradually. Starting in the uplands, with high-altitude lakes such as Titisee, you will gently make your way down towards the Rhine Valley, swapping legendary forests for the lush vineyards of the Markgräflerland and the charm of towns and cities such as Freiburg and Basel. It is a complete immersion in the many different sides of the Black Forest.
On this self-guided holiday, you cycle at your own pace, following our detailed route guide. Each evening, the enjoyment continues in the comfort of traditional hotels we have selected for their character and warm hospitality. Several even have wellness facilities, perfect for relaxing after the day’s ride. This attention to your comfort is a hallmark of our self-guided holidays.
This route is ideal for cyclists who enjoy a mix of well-maintained cycle paths and quiet minor roads. If you are looking for a more mountainous experience on trails, our Upper Black Forest Electric Mountain Bike Tour may suit you better. Germany is full of treasures to discover on two wheels; to explore all the options and choose the holiday that suits you, browse all our Black Forest holidays or contact our advisers directly for expert advice.

Program
Leave Hinterzarten and ride through a small forest to reach Titisee, an upmarket resort renowned for its beautiful lake.
If you are hiring bikes, you will need to collect them in Titisee, travelling there by train (a 4-minute journey, free with the KONUS guest card provided by your hotel).
Take some time to explore Titisee (and perhaps go for a swim?) before continuing alongside the railway towards Neustadt, then Lenzkirch (850m) and Bonndorf (866m), near the Wutach Gorge: expect forests, meadows and large traditional farmhouses. The terrain is gently rolling, with plenty of easy paths.
A few kilometres beyond Bonndorf, the rural scenery gives way to a generally downhill route. The route takes you alongside the wild Wutach Gorge. Unfortunately, you will not be able to explore it on foot. However, a short detour by bike and a little climbing to the magnificent “Wutachflühen” viewpoint are well worth the effort. From here, the view stretches down to the riverbed far below, with its unique flora and fauna. The stage continues along the “Sauschwänzle” railway and the Wutach, finishing among the grand townhouses in Waldshut town centre.
The Rhine will be your companion on this stage. Just a stone’s throw from Switzerland, you can decide whether to cross the river and cycle along the Swiss side. The scenery is more industrial in places, as the Rhine Valley is known for its industrial activity. You pass through Laufenburg, a town that spans two countries, divided by a natural border… the Rhine! You then reach Bad Säckingen, with its basilica and long covered wooden bridge. After passing the nature reserve at the mouth of the Wehra, you arrive in Rheinfelden.
The gently descending route follows the Rhine.
The route follows the Rhine to Basel, Switzerland’s third most populous city.
A few kilometres beyond Rheinfelden, you pass the impressive Roman town of Augusta Raurica, with its amphitheatre and archaeological excavations. If you would like to avoid the urban traffic around Basel, you can take a boat from Rheinfelden to the city centre. The cycle path takes you back to the German side via the world’s longest footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists (250m; it stands 238m above the Rhine).
You can also take the Dinkelberg route near Rheinfelden, although this involves a little extra climbing.
Basel is considered Switzerland’s cultural capital and is also famous for its pharmaceutical industry. You will probably be able to spot the “Roche Towers”, Switzerland’s tallest skyscrapers!
This is a long stage heading north along the Rhine, through fields and then the flourishing wine-growing region of Markgräflerland (Chasselas). Along the way, you discover Bad Bellingen, a beautiful town on the banks of the Rhine, in the heart of the region’s white wine vineyards. The day’s destination is Müllheim.
The route takes you once again through the rolling vineyards of the Markgräferland region, passing through the town of Staufen on your way to Freiburg im Breisgau. Explore its medieval centre and magnificent cathedral. Cycling through the winding streets of this charming town is particularly enjoyable. The Southern Black Forest Cycle Route ends in Kirchzarten. From there, you take the train to Hinterzarten. If you are hiring bikes, you take the train to Titisee to return them, then travel back to Hinterzarten by train.
On arrival in Hinterzarten, you collect your luggage and spend a final night there.
We may occasionally need to change the itinerary shown, either for practical reasons (accommodation capacity issues, changes in terrain conditions, landslides, damaged trails, etc.) or because of weather conditions. These changes are always made in your best interests, for your safety and greater comfort!

Technical and practical information
Level 2/5
Easy to moderate. No technical difficulties; the terrain is gentle, sometimes undulating but with no major climbs, and mostly downhill overall; the route mainly follows cycle paths and greenways along the Rhine, with occasional shared roads.
Approximately 70% on cycle paths and 30% on shared roads. The cycle paths are particularly well laid out and signposted.
The Southern Black Forest cycle path network is certified by the ADFC (German Cyclists' Association).
Level 1 if you are riding an electric bike.
One point to bear in mind: as its name suggests, this route takes you around the Black Forest. You will enjoy a wonderful immersion in the region, but the route does not pass through its most authentic area, the High Black Forest. See our DEULV0044 High Black Forest Electric Mountain Bike Tour if you would like to discover more of the Black Forest’s wild charm.
You only carry a small bag with your picnic and everything you need for the day. Your luggage will be waiting for you at the hotel in the evening: it is transferred by the hotelier or by taxi. Maximum weight: 20 kg. We recommend keeping a change of clothes in your panniers, as rare, unforeseen circumstances, such as traffic jams, can sometimes delay the delivery of your luggage.
In 3* hotels or equivalent, in a room for two with a bathroom. Single rooms can be booked for a supplement.
Our German and Austrian neighbours generally do not have double beds with a single large mattress, and rooms with 2 twin beds are also rare. Usually, there is a single bed base with two 90 cm mattresses; each person has their own duvet. Rooms for 3: these usually have an extra bed added, although the rooms are generally spacious.
Breakfast is included. Lunches and dinners are at your own expense. Most hotels also serve meals; otherwise, there is a restaurant nearby. At each overnight stop, you can stock up on provisions, or stop at an inn along the way; German soups are hearty yet delicious and inexpensive: ideal for a lunch break!… at any time of day…
For rooms for 2, there is rarely the same distinction you may be used to between a double room (one large bed for 2) and a twin room (2 separate beds): most often, the beds consist of two 90 cm mattresses placed side by side, each with its own sheets and duvet.
Hotel or Gasthof? Germans and Austrians themselves often struggle to explain the difference… A Gasthof is generally family-run and has been around for several generations; it will often have more traditional character. A hotel is generally a more impersonal and newer establishment… which does not stop Gasthofs from regularly undergoing impressive makeovers! But this distinction mainly applies in large cities (where you will find chain hotels, but never chain Gasthofs).
On Day 1 in the afternoon at the hotel in Hinterzarten.
On Day 7 in the afternoon at the hotel in Hinterzarten.

- A helmet
- Sunglasses (for protection from the sun, wind and midges)
- A windproof jacket
- T-shirts or cycling jerseys
- A handlebar map holder or smartphone mount (and a power bank)
- A water bottle
Please note: synthetic technical clothing performs very well. New merino wool clothing is also available; it performs very well, is comfortable to wear and has the advantage of resisting sweat odours (brands include Icebreaker, Ruka, etc.)! As a general rule, avoid cotton, which makes you cold when wet.
For protection from the sun and rain
- Sunscreen and sunglasses
- A hat, cap or bucket hat (helmet)
- A windproof jacket
- A rain poncho or a Gore-Tex jacket
- A jumper or fleece
- Comfortable walking trousers
- Shorts
- A tracksuit or a change of clothes
- A lightweight, long-sleeved cotton shirt
- A pair of running-style trainers for the evenings
- Spare clothes and underwear
- A toiletry bag
- Swimwear
- A small first aid kit: personal medication, Elastoplast, Biogaze or “2nd skin” dressings, gauze, disinfectant, arnica granules and aspirin for minor aches and injuries …
- If your bike does not have a pannier, bring a comfortable small 40-litre backpack with a waist belt to carry your personal belongings and picnic during the day. If you have a luggage rack, you can secure your bag to it with bungee cords. Rental bikes come with a pannier for your belongings. Bring a small backpack as well; this makes it easy to carry your belongings when you stop to visit somewhere along the way.
- One bag for luggage transfers: a backpack, suitcase or travel bag in good condition, weighing no more than 20 kg
