A walk through the 2 most renowned massifs in Romania: the Piatra Craiului massif, established as a National Park, and the Bucegi Mountains, the land of Dracula. The Piatra Craiului mountains are among the most spectacular in the country and are home to remarkable flora and fauna, notably the lynx. The long narrow ridge is naturally divided into 3 mountains. Right next to it, the Bucegi are the highest mountains in Romania, with a peak reaching 2505m. The distinctive feature of Romanian mountains is that they are inhabited and used everywhere. These walks will therefore also offer you wonderful pastoral scenes and unforgettable encounters.

During this stay, you will explore the Piatra Craiului and Bucegi massifs, mountains very dear to Romanians which have inspired many folk songs and legends. Come discover the variety of flora and fauna in the natural parks, forests, and spectacular landscapes. Alpine huts perched in the high mountain pastures and medieval fortresses will also be on the agenda.

Program

Welcome by our local partner in Bucharest, at the North Station or directly at your hotel (if you have booked an extra night the day before). Handover of travel documents. Ideally, departure by train from Bucharest no later than 15:00 and arriving in Brașov in approximately 2 hours 45 minutes. This will be followed by a private transfer to the Măgura accommodation.

Please note: we need to know your arrival and departure times one month before the start of your trip, so that we can book your train accordingly. The last train leaves at 16:45; after that, a private transfer to your first accommodation is charged as a supplement.

Train Bucharest - Brașov (2h45) then Brașov - Măgura (1h)

AccommodationDinner and night in a guest house.

Your first day of hiking will gently take you into the Piatra Craiului massif (‘The King’s Rock’) through the impressive Zărnești gorges, to the traditional mountain refuge Curmătura where Reta, the refuge keeper, will welcome you with excellent soup and her famous apple pie. If you still have energy and the weather allows, an extension of about 1.5km leads to the Crăpăturii saddle (Șaua Crăpăturii). On the way back to the guesthouse, you walk through the Zărnești gorges and their 200m vertical walls.

Today you will hike through a bucolic landscape, following a small ridge that descends to Bran Castle. The castle built in the 14th century had a defensive role against barbarian attacks. The castle is also linked to the fictional character Dracula, based on the real Wallachian prince, Vlad Țepeş! At the end of the hike, transfer back to the guesthouse from this morning. If you would like a longer day, you can walk back along a pleasant woodland path on the Via Transilvanica, the long-distance trail that crosses Romania from north-east to south-west.

Today’s hike within Piatra Craiului National Park will allow you to discover pastures, shepherds' huts, forests and scattered villages, typical Carpathian landscapes and will lead you to a traditional village. You can choose between two variants: a gentler route via Curmătura Groapelor, or a more adventurous one with two particularly steep sections (one descent and one climb).

You leave the Piatra Craiului massif to arrive at the foot of the Bucegi massif. An easy hike in the heart of landscapes worthy of postcard images will be on the programme. You will hike through scattered villages to meet the shepherds. Once, these villages had a long cheese-making tradition. A tasting stop will become a must for the most keen. Possibility to extend the stage.

The day begins with a ride of almost 5km by horse cart to the edge of the village, then you continue on foot towards the Bucegi massif. A long hike beneath the impressive Strunga wall: you cross two passes, Strunga and Strungulița, and walk past a mountain refuge on the former border between Transylvania and Wallachia. At 2,000m, the Strunga pass is the highest point of your trip. This out-and-back hike can be extended to enjoy a superb 360° panorama over the two national parks.

As this is your last day of mountain hiking, you can choose between three routes of different lengths.

A number of our trips lend themselves to swimming, during a stage or at the end of the day. It would be a pity not to take advantage of it. However, we emphasize that you alone are the judges of the opportunity for swimming; these swimming activities are therefore carried out at your own responsibility and risk.

Romania has a fairly pronounced continental climate, with distinct seasons and significant temperature fluctuations. Winter is long and severe, but dry and healthy (dry cold) with heavy snowfall, particularly throughout the Carpathian region (from November to March-April). Spring and autumn are very pleasant but short, with significant temperature differences between day and night. Summer is very hot and exhausting in Bucharest, throughout the Wallachian plain and in Dobruja. The Black Sea coast is never oppressive. In Maramureş, in the Apuseni Mountains, in the Moldavian mountains or in Bucovina, summer is pleasantly moderated by vegetation and fairly frequent rainfall. - Coldest month (in Bucharest): January (- 7 °C). - Hottest month (in Bucharest): July (+ 30 °C). This trip combined a visit to Bucharest with a hiking trip in the Carpathians, followed by a stay in the Danube Delta. The overall organization was excellent, and all the trips were great and complemented each other very well. The accommodations were very nice.
