Surrounded by unspoilt nature, the walk begins in a village once famous for its iron mines. Winding through forests and along balcony paths, the route reveals the striking Nyer Gorges, protected as a nature reserve. The approach to Mantet is gentle, almost unexpected, passing through carefully laid-out old hay meadows that lead to this village at the end of the world.
The Canigou Circuit
The Canigou massif is an enchanting mountain offering a variety of landscapes and vegetation to explore and experience. Discover the wild forests of Tres Estelles, the deep gorges of Mantet and Cady, the gentle hills of Pla Guillem and the lakes of Cadi and Cortalet. Herds of Pyrenean chamois will proudly guide you towards the soaring “dog’s tooth” summit of Canigou, a symbol and historic landmark for an entire nation. The cacti near the foot of the massif can never rival the delicate gentians beside the perpetual snow. The dark velvet of the mountain pines, reaching ever higher on slopes with mild climates, contrasts with the varied colours of the Mediterranean flora and its celebrated fragrances. People have always known how to live in harmony with this unspoilt, pastoral mountain, a tradition embodied by its legendary mountain hut wardens and the hosts of Mantet, as skilled in the culinary arts as they are in telling local tales.

Program
A circular walk through the wild Mantet Nature Reserve brings you into the realm of Pyrenean chamois, so graceful as they move across their scree slopes. The route alternates between stretches beside the rushing Alemany stream and passages through summer pastures and high-altitude pine forests, where the mountain landscape feels by turns intimate and expansive. The climb up the Alemany valley leads towards the pic de la Dona, recognisable by its gentle, feminine curves.
Heading towards the hay meadows surrounding the village, where the separate branches of the Mantet river merge into one, the route opens onto the wild, unspoilt Caret valley. Its dense forests, hidden slopes and proximity to the lofty pic de Ribes Blanques and the green col de l’Orri create a landscape that feels both intimate and powerful. In these secluded valleys, memories still linger of the goat herders of old and their fine herds.
A remarkable traverse across vast Hercynian plateaus, then along the quartz spires of the Esquerdes de Rotja, with one foot in the Py Nature Reserve and the other in the Prats‑de‑Mollo Nature Reserve. A gentle descent then leads to the foot of the iconic peak.
A gradual climb through the Cadi valley. Higher up, the dense forest of fir and spruce gradually gives way to open summer pastures, where you may spot a few herds of Pyrenean chamois. The eagerly awaited ascent of Pic du Canigó (2784m), with a 360° view over the Pyrenees, Spain and as far as the Mediterranean.
The Balcon du Canigou, with its panoramic views over the Roussillon plain and the Conflent hills. A descent through woodland then leads towards the foothills.
A short transfer after breakfast marks the end of the trip.
We may sometimes need to make slight changes to the itinerary shown for logistical reasons (accommodation capacity issues, changes in ground conditions such as rockfalls, damaged trails, etc.). You can trust us: these changes are always made in your best interests, for your safety and greater comfort!

For carrying your belongings
- A comfortable 30 to 50 L backpack with a hip belt to carry your personal belongings and picnic lunch during the day
- A bag for luggage transfers: a backpack, a travel bag in good condition or a suitcase that is not too bulky. One bag per person, weighing no more than 15 kg
Find out how to pack your hiking backpack in our Mag.
For hiking
For maximum comfort, choose a layered clothing system: warm base layers (leggings + top) such as “carline” or “capilene” (hollow fibres that wick away perspiration) + a sweatshirt or fleece jacket + a mountain jacket and overtrousers with a waterproof, breathable membrane (such as “Gore-Tex” or equivalent) for bad weather. As a general rule, except in hot climates and countries, avoid cotton, which holds moisture close to the body (and is slow to dry), and opt for suitable synthetic fabrics instead.
- Hiking boots with ankle support, a good treaded sole, a firm heel counter and good waterproofing
- Comfortable hiking socks (at least 3 pairs)
- A fleece
- Comfortable walking trousers (quick-drying technical fabric)
- Comfortable shorts made from technical fabric
- T-shirts or base layers made from technical fabric (quick-drying material)
- A long-sleeved shirt
- Walking poles (telescopic), very important for making walking easier. Discover all the benefits of hiking poles in our dedicated article, or read about how to choose hiking poles
Note: synthetic technical clothing performs very well. New merino wool clothing is also available; it performs very well, is comfortable to wear and has the advantage of not developing sweat odours!
For your lunchtime picnic
- Your “kitchen” kit: a plastic bowl, container or plate, and cutlery (spoon, fork, knife)
- 1 or 2 water bottles (a total capacity of at least 1,5 L) – essential –; an insulated flask for winter
Protection from sun and rain
- Sunscreen (high protection)
- Sunglasses
- A hat, cap or bucket hat
- A rain poncho or a waterproof jacket, such as a softshell or Gore-Tex jacket, and optionally waterproof trousers
After your walk
- A pair of running-style trainers for the evening
- A change of clothes and underwear
- A toiletry bag and a small towel
- Swimwear and a towel for wellness facilities (where specified) or swimming
- A small first-aid kit: personal medication, surgical masks, hand sanitiser, plasters, sterile dressings and a bandage, gauze, disinfectant, arnica pellets and aspirin, etc. (Please note that this list is not exhaustive and should be adapted to your own medical needs.)
Find these tips in our article “what to take on a hike”.
This list is provided as a guide and should be adapted to your trip and the season in which you are travelling.
