Choosing a mountain holiday, on foot or by bike

A mountain holiday can follow a mountainside trail, cross a pass or link several valleys by bike. The right trip depends mainly on your experience, the elevation gain and how much time you want to spend outdoors. This selection brings together our itineraries in France and beyond, with self-guided and guided options.

Compare difficulty levels before choosing

Start by looking at the daily activity time and the stated elevation gain. A trip in lower mountain ranges calls for different experience from a journey crossing several mountain passes. Our trip descriptions explain the difficulty level of each holiday. The What is my level? page helps you compare the criteria before choosing.

Self-guided or with a guided group

On our self-guided holidays, you travel without a guide. Depending on the trip, we book accommodation and provide the documents you need to follow the itinerary. The exact services included, particularly luggage transfers, are specified in each trip description.

On our guided holidays, a guide leads the group and adapts the itinerary to the conditions encountered. This option suits you if you would like to enjoy walking with others and leave more of the organisation to the team.

Hiking or cycling: compare the right criteria

Our selection of hiking holidays ranges from active walks to demanding treks. Cycling holidays call for different criteria: daily distances, the route’s elevation profile and the type of bike. Compare these details rather than relying on the destination’s name alone.

Mountain ranges to discover

In France, you can compare the Alps, the Pyrenees, the Massif Central, the Vosges and the Jura. The Dolomites, the Atlas Mountains and the mountains of Greece offer other terrain to explore. Each trip description specifies the season, difficulty level and travel format.

When to travel depends on the mountain range, altitude and itinerary. You can browse our spring hiking holidays or those offered in September, then check the dates in each trip description.

Mountain holidays with your family

For trips with children, explore our family holidays, family hiking holidays and family cycling holidays. The recommended age, distances and difficulty level are listed for each trip.

If several trips seem suitable, contact us. We can help you compare their difficulty levels, travel formats and dates.

—  This was one of the best trips of my life!! Physically, the hiking was challenging, but doable, which was what my party was looking for. Every minute of the day, the views were SPECTACULAR!!! Literally breathtaking. Our guide took great care of us and we LOVED our 3 course meals every night in the different, fascinating cities. We also met so many fun and friendly people on the Tour. Loved it all❤️

—  Scenery was out of this world. The ascents were hard but it meant you could stop and take it all in, take your time and appreciate just what you are achieving.

—  Deviously difficult mountain hikes and climbs, so be prepared and be in shape. Utterly thrilling with majestic views. Warm accommodations and great meals.

—  Grand Angle's advice for organizing our 6-day TMB fully met our expectations; the route, the stages and the suggested accommodations perfectly matched our requirements. We were lucky enough to enjoy exceptional weather during the period the agency had recommended. We experienced exceptional moments, made lovely encounters and enjoyed views over magnificent landscapes. A little break from life, to be repeated!
