Why go hiking in August?

August offers some of the most stable and favorable weather for hiking, especially at higher altitudes. The days are long, the trails are generally free of snow, and the mountain huts and local villages are alive with a welcoming summer atmosphere. It’s the perfect time to tackle classic treks in the Alps or explore coastal routes, enjoying pleasant temperatures and lush, green scenery. While it’s a popular month, careful planning and choosing the right itinerary allows for an immersive experience away from the biggest crowds.

Our approach to August hiking trips

With decades of experience, Grand Angle crafts journeys that balance activity with comfort. We handle the logistics (booking charming accommodations and transferring your luggage) so you can focus on the trail ahead.

Freedom on a self-guided tour

For those who love independence, our self-guided hiking tours are the perfect solution. We provide you with detailed itineraries, GPS tracks, and maps, giving you the structure you need with the freedom to explore at your own pace. It’s an ideal way to connect with your surroundings while knowing all the details are taken care of.

Shared experience on a guided tour

Join one of our guided groups to share the journey with like-minded travelers and benefit from the insights of a professional mountain leader. Our guides enrich the experience with their knowledge of local flora, fauna, and culture, while ensuring your safety and comfort. These trips are perfect for solo travelers looking to join a group or anyone wanting a deeper, expert-led discovery. Explore our guided walking holidays in France for a taste of this experience.

Where to hike in August? Our flagship destinations

August opens up a vast playground for hikers. Here are some of the standout regions featured in our trips:

The majestic Dolomites

With their unique limestone peaks and sprawling alpine meadows, the Dolomites hiking tours offer dramatic scenery and a rich local culture. August provides sunny, warm conditions ideal for famous routes like the Alta Via 1 or exploring the stunning massifs around Cortina d’Ampezzo.

The iconic Tour du Mont Blanc

Circling Western Europe’s highest peak, the guided Tour du Mont Blanc is a world-renowned trek passing through France, Italy, and Switzerland. In August, the weather is typically warm, though mountain conditions can change quickly. The trails are bustling with a vibrant, international atmosphere, making it a sociable and rewarding challenge.

The Greek Islands under the sun

For a different kind of summer trek, consider our walking tours in Greece. While mainland temperatures can be high, island trails on Crete or in the Cyclades benefit from coastal breezes. These routes combine stunning sea views, ancient paths, and visits to charming villages, offering a perfect mix of culture and nature.

Practical advice for your August trek

When to book?

August is the peak hiking season across Europe. To ensure availability on our most popular tours and secure the best accommodations, we highly recommend booking several months in advance. Early planning guarantees a wider choice of dates and trip styles.

Choosing your trip

Consider your fitness level and what you want from your holiday. Are you looking for a challenging high-altitude trek or a more moderate walk through rolling hills? Each trip page provides a detailed difficulty rating and daily itinerary. For gearing up, consult our expert advice on creating a day hike packing list to ensure you have everything you need.

Explore further: other seasons and activities

Travelers who enjoy the vibrant energy of hiking in August often return to explore the mountains in a different light. Consider a trip in September for golden autumn colors and quieter trails. Our hiking in autumn selection offers crisp air and stunning scenery. If you love the Alps in summer, you might also enjoy discovering them with different activities; many of our destinations, such as the Dolomites, offer fantastic biking tours in Italy. For those who prefer a different kind of challenge, we also offer custom itineraries tailored to your interests; feel free to contact us to design your unique adventure.

—  This was one of the best trips of my life!! Physically, the hiking was challenging, but doable, which was what my party was looking for. Every minute of the day, the views were SPECTACULAR!!! Literally breathtaking. Our guide took great care of us and we LOVED our 3 course meals every night in the different, fascinating cities. We also met so many fun and friendly people on the Tour. Loved it all❤️

—  Grand Angle's advice for organizing our 6-day TMB fully met our expectations; the route, the stages and the suggested accommodations perfectly matched our requirements. We were lucky enough to enjoy exceptional weather during the period the agency had recommended. We experienced exceptional moments, made lovely encounters and enjoyed views over magnificent landscapes. A little break from life, to be repeated!

—  Scenery was out of this world. The ascents were hard but it meant you could stop and take it all in, take your time and appreciate just what you are achieving.

—  The route is as difficult as stated in the brochure, even dangerous in some sections, but extraordinarily beautiful, all the more so as we had good weather all week. The guide was friendly and attentive whenever one of us ran into difficulty, and the welcome at the refuges was warm. To be done by fit people who aren't prone to vertigo!
